Creative Minds International Public Charter School (CMIPCS) is currently seeking a Speech-Language Pathologist. Speech-Language Pathologists in the school setting help children with speech, language or communication disorders navigate the learning environment and provide them with the tools they need to successfully communicate their thoughts and ideas.


Position Overview and Responsibilities:
The Speech/Language Pathologist reports to the Director of Inclusion and collaborates with Special Education Coordinators, related service providers, and general education staff. Speech/Language Pathologists are dedicated to creating an inclusive and progressive space for students to learn. The Speech/Language Pathologist has a passion for assessing, diagnosing and treating speech, language, and social communication in students with disabilities. Speech Therapists are professionals who understand the importance of language in curriculum and student success. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing evaluations and remediation of a variety of disorders and/or delays. Including, conducting informal and formal screenings of students who are possible candidates for special education referral as identified by teachers and Director of Inclusion or Special Education Coordinator. 
  • Conduct triennial re-evaluations of students who receive speech and language therapy.
  • Participate in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students who qualify for speech-language services reports, IEP goals, and progress notes in student IEP folders in such a way that they are useful to families, teachers, and other service providers.
  • Using knowledge of current research-based best practices, design and implement therapeutic programs for individual students and groups of students based on IEP goals and objectives either in the inclusive general education setting or in pull-out sessions.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, special education teachers and other related service providers to identify instructional strategies and accommodations/modifications that promote student success in all content areas.
  • Assist students, families, and staff in understanding students’ speech and language disorders so that all can advocate for and support students’ achievement of their academic, behavioral, language, and social goals. Refer families to outside organizations as appropriate.
  • Maintain the Speech and Language evaluation materials, therapeutic equipment and supplies.
  • Provide training and education to family/caregivers and other professionals;
  • Act as a resource and support classroom teachers in the implementation of IEP goals, design instructional supports by modifying/adapting curriculum;
  • Prepare quarterly individual student progress reports;
  • Communicate with families regarding service delivery and progress;
  • Encourage families’ involvement in students’ therapy goals;
  • Document and report student progress toward achievement of annual goals by collecting and interpreting data;
  • Attend and participate in parent conferences and IEP meetings
  • Participate in continued professional growth activities to advance knowledge of effective instructional curriculum and methodologies for students with special needs;
  • Related duties as requested

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Speech Language Therapy; 
  • District of Columbia Speech Therapy License

Desired Qualities

  • Demonstrated communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member;
  • Experience using the Special Education Data System (SEDS/EasyIEP);
  • Specialized and differentiated methods of instruction for a wide variety of students and their needs; 
  • Evaluative strategies to assess the effective delivery of special education services and support.
  • 3+ years of related experience preferred;
  • Experience working with special needs students in an inclusive setting.
  • Knowledge of state requirements for special education 

Remote Work Requirements:

  • Thoughtfully plan engaging teletherapy sessions that address all IEP goals that can be addressed in a remote session
  • Engage families in ensuring skill carryover by coaching parents/caregivers in next steps after teletherapy sessions
  • Collaborate with caregivers on skills that are most important for student success in remote learning
  • Demonstrate openness to informal observations to ensure quality of teletherapy services
  • Ensure that session documentation is thorough, clear, and placed in required locations (EasyIEP, internal school trackers); document all communication with parent/caregiver in trackers as requested
  • Communicate any challenges with session participation, scheduling, and consistency to Director of Inclusion as needed

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

  • Prolonged periods standing and walking throughout school and classroom.
  • Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds at a time. 
  • Must be able to assist students who have physical difficulties.
  • Must be able to kneel, sit, stand, crawl, push, and pull to assist and teach children throughout the day.
  • Prolonged periods sitting and working on the computer to complete necessary paperwork

 

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this position, the employee is occasionally exposed to humid conditions and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but may increase at various times.
